Indiana stallion farm Breakway Farm, LLC, is celebrating after one of the stallions sired a big winner on Thursday at Horseshoe Indianapolis. Solar Power broke his maiden in a big way, edging to the front in a maiden special weight in open company, crossing the wire first in 1:04:87 after five and a half furlongs on a fast track. The son of Skylord was piloted by Marcelino Pedroza, Jr., to the win.
Bred by Crystal Chapple, DVM, and Michael Phelps and owned and trained by Randy Matthews, Solar Power is by leading Indiana stallion Skylord and out of the Unbridled Energy mare, Royal Energy. It was only his second lifetime race, the first he barely finished off the board, racing at Churchill Downs.
The colt showed heart, edging Pennsylvania-bred Natural Harbor (Munnings – Perfectly Candid, by Pleasantly Perfect) at the wire after a stretch duel. Natural Harbor is owned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, LLC, and trained by Tom Amoss. Finishing third was Kentucky-bred Mogul Crack (Distorted Humor – Empire Desire, by Empire Maker), owned by St. George Stable, LLC and trained by Fausto Gutierrez.
“It’s so exciting to see horses sired in Indiana winning in the open races,” says Janice Jordan, owner of Breakway Farm. “Solar Power is an athlete. Skylord has the Kentucky bloodlines, so it’s not surprising that his foals can compete in those races.”
“Solar Power is a great horse, who is dangerous in anyone’s hands,” says owner Matthews. “It was an exciting finish.”
Solar Power paid $6.80 to win.
